PUNE, April 11, 2017 (SNN 24/7) – Sanju Samson smashed the first century of the 2017 Indian Premier League to help Delhi Daredevils to a commanding 97-run victory over Rising Pune Supergiant at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Tuesday.

Sanju Samson and Chris Morris were the only batsmen in the match who looked like feeling at home on the Pune track as none of the other batsmen could strike a half-century. The pitch generally helped the slower bowlers more than the pacers, reflected well by the bowling averages for the medium pacers. Almost all the pacemen got manhandled on the Pune pitch with the exception of Pat Cummins and Zaheer Khan.

With this victory, the Delhi Daredevils have surged to the third position in the IPL 10 Points Table whereas the Rising Pune Supergiant plummeted to the seventh position with two defeats from three matches. The table is led by Hyderabad Sunrisers, followed by Kings XI Punjab.

Highest victory margin for Delhi Daredevils

This is the biggest victory margin for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League matches. Their previous best was by 67 runs which they achieved in March 2010. This is the first time since 2012 that the Daredevils have posted a total in excess of 200 runs.

Rising Pune Supergiant skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and decided to chase a target, anticipating the dew factor would assist his team’s cause.

Aditya Tare fell for a duck straight away but Sam Billings (24 off 17 – 4 fours) and Sanju Samson (102 off 63 – 8 fours, 5 sixes) contributed 69 runs to the second wicket partnership to revive the innings from the initial blow.

Samson-Morris show

South Africa leggie Imran Tahir got rid of the Englishman but Rishabh Pant (31 off 22 – 1 four, 2 sixes) joined the party and played some expensive shots before Agarwal ran him out. Together with Samson, Pant added another 53 crucial runs to the total.

Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa clean-bowled Samson but South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris went completely berserk. Morris smashed three towering sixes and four boundaries during his nine-ball knock of 38*, which took Delhi Daredevils to the highest score of the IPL10. The Daredevils finished with 4/205 off 20 overs.

Imran Tahir, the standout performer

Apart from Imran Tahir (4-0-24-1), none of the other Pune bowlers could do the job with the ball. Ashok Dinda (3-0-36-0), Deepak Chahar (3-0-35-1), Ben Stokes (4-0-41-0), Adam Zampa (4-0-45-1), and Rajat Bhatia (2-0-21-0) all went for in excess of 10 runs per over.

No inspiration for Pune sans Steven Smith

In absence of skipper Steven Smith, Ajinkya Rahane took charge of the Rising Pune Supergiant but he failed to deal with the captaincy pressure right at the top of the batting order. Ajinkya Rahane (10 off 9), Mayank Agarwal (20 off 18 – 2 fours), Faf du Plessis (8 off 7 – 1 four), Rahul Tripathi (10 off 5 – 2 fours), and Ben Stokes (2 off 5) all went back into the pavilion in a hurry.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni (11 off 14 – 1 six) also failed to live up to the expectations and as Rajat Bhatia (16 off 17 – 1 six) and Deepak Chahar (14 off 6 – 2 fours) fell, the Rising Pune Supergiant were wrapped up for 10/108 from 16.1 overs.

Bowlers doing the job for Delhi Daredevils

Shahbaz Nadeem (4-0-23-1), Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins (3.1-0-24-2), Zaheer Khan (3-0-20-3), and Amit Mishra (3-0-11-3) all bowled exceptionally well and used their fielding plans to a great effect.
