Defending champions India failed to defend their SAFF Cup title despite an injury-time goal by Sumeet Passi.

KARACHI, September 15, 2018 (SNN24/7) – Maldives lift the second SAFF Cup title by defeating the seven-time champions India by 2-1 in the final played at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Saturday.
Ibrahim gave an early advantage to the Maldives in the 19th minute. The score remained 1-0 at half-time despite all the efforts India made to reinstate the equilibrium.

Ali Fasir strike in the 66th minute of the match to double the lead for the Maldives. India tried hard and Sumeet Passi finally managed to score one in the injury time (92nd minute) but it was too little too late for the defending champions.
India were playing their seventh straight final as they beat arch-rivals Pakistan in the second semi-final by 3-1 played at the same venue.
The Maldives had a convincing victory against Nepal in the first semi-final by 3-0. This was the fourth meeting between the two teams in the finals of SAFF Cup as both teams have now won twice in the finals.
