KARACHI, October 28, 2018 (SNN247.com) – Sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine left it late to complete her maiden title triumph at the 2018 WTA Finals at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore on Sunday evening.
Elina Svitolina came from a set down to stun fifth-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States to end victorious in the season-ending tournament on the WTA calendar.
The two players fought really hard during the evenly-contested final which lasted for 143 minutes. Elina Svitolina showed great form right throughout the tournament as she won all of her five matches in the competition. She is only the first player to finish the WTA Finals undefeated since 2013 when America’s Serena Williams achieved the feat.
The success at the year-ending WTA Finals in Singapore also capped a remarkable year for the Ukrainian player who clinched four titles including titles in Brisbane, Dubai, and Rome.
During her undefeated stint at the WTA Finals, Elina Svitolina got the better of defending champions Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, Kiki Bertens of The Netherlands, and the Czech duo of Petra Kvitova and Karolina Pliskova.
Sloane Stephens got off the mark in a hurry as she romped to victory in the first set by 6-3. On the contrary, Svitolina looked sluggish during the early minutes and butterflies in the stomach were visible in her game in the opening set. However, once she got her feet moving and her muscles warmed up, she looked like a completely different player.
Elina Svitolina resorted to her signature aggressive style in the second set and everything changed for her afterward. Although she failed to register success on her serves, her court play was beyond expectations. She returned the serves with bigger force and speed which rattled Stephens’ game altogether.
Svitolina’s aggression inspired her to a brilliant title triumph, which is set to propel her three spots on the fourth position in the WTA Rankings, which will be released on Monday. Svitolina has won nine finals on the trot.
With Svitolina’s victory, the tournament ended its five-year stint in Singapore as it will be staged in Shenzhen next year.
Earlier in the day, second-seeded pair of Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic outclassed world number one pair of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova 6-4 7-5 in 84 minutes to lift the doubles title.
