Wang Yafan clinches maiden Mexican Open title in Acapulco

KARACHI, March 3, 2019 ( – Wang Yafan of China achieved the biggest title of her WTA career on Saturday evening when she clinched the Mexican Open, also known as Acapulco Open, in Acapulco, Mexico.

World number 65 Wang Yafan got her hands to maiden WTA Tour title after a clinical victory against fifth-seeded Sofia Kenin of the United States on the hardcourts of The Princess Mundo Imperial.

The 24-year-old Chinese tennis player exhibited strong character and amazing will to fight right to the end as she came from behind to win the title match against her American counterpart by 2-6 6-3 7-5.

Wang Yafan lost the first set 2-6 and was trailing 0-2 in the second set before presenting her true game in her first appearance in Acapulco Open.

Talking to an interviewer after the Mexican Open title triumph, Wang Yafan said, “This is my first time in Acapulco, and I really like it here. It was an amazing week. This is a good tournament and everything is very nice.”

Earlier in the day, Victoria Azarenka also returned to the title winning ways in a remarkable fashion, but not as a single player. Victoria Azarenka teamed up with China’s Zheng Saisai to defeat third-seeded American’s Desirae Krawczyk and Giuliana Olmos of Mexico in straight sets by 6-1 6-2 to clinch the doubles title in the Mexican Open. This is the first title victory for Victoria Azarenka since giving birth to son Leo in December 2016.
