Biggest Upsets in BNP Paribas Open 2019 First Round

KARACHI, March 8, 2019 (SNN247.com) – The BNP Paribas Open 2019 has got off to a rollicking start in Indian Wells, California where all the top international tennis players are battling it out for the supremacy in the 11-day event.

However, the tournament’s first round has turned out to be a lethal one as a good number of renowned international players have made a shocking early exit from the event.

In the first round matches of the WTA Indian Wells Open played on Thursday, players like Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, Alize Cornet of Italy, Andrea Petkovic of Germany, Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, Timea Babos of Hungry, Samantha Stosur of Australia, and Zheng Saisai of China failed to prolong their stay at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Kirsten Flipkens of Germany outlasted Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in a three-set thriller by 7-5 3-6 7-5 in the first round match of the BNP Paribas Open. She will next face Danielle Collins of the United States for a place in the third round.

Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia put an end to the campaign of Italian veteran tennis player Alize Cornet in a straight sets victory by 7-5 6-3. In the second round, Ajla Tomljanovic will face Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.

Venus Williams of the United States received medical attentions from her trainer in the first set but kept her focus in a seesaw first round match against Andrea Petkovic of Germany by 6-4 0-6 6-3. Venus Williams will face off against Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who downed her compatriot Vera Lapko in straight sets by 6-2 6-3 in the first round match.

Misaki Doi of Japan stunned Ons Jabeur in a comfortable 6-3 6-3 victory to storm into the second round where she will be up against fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic.

Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan breezed into the last-64 round with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Timea Babos of Hungry. She will play eighth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in the second round.

Madison Brengle of the United States thumped Samantha Stosur of Australia 6-2 6-3 to enter the round of 64 at Indian Wells. Madison Brengle will be up against Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in the second round match on Friday.

Kristina Mladenovic of France proved too strong for China’s Zheng Saisai in the first round match of the WTA Indian Wells Open. She entered the second round with a 7-5 6-2 victory over her Chinese opponent. She will face off against Naomi Osaka of Japan in the second round match on Friday.
