KARACHI, October 6, 2019 (SNN247.com) – Dominic Thiem of Austria rang alarm bells for his opponents ahead of the ATP Finals 2019 on Sunday when he clinched China Open 2019 title, his fourth of the Year 2019, in Beijing, China.
It turned out to be the most lethal encounter of the China Open 2019 where Dominic Thiem withheld a strong challenge by Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the three-set thrilling final.
The Austrian tennis star stood like a rock amid an amazing display of tennis by his Greek opponent. He eventually imposed his authority with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph. With this victory, Thiem added another feather to his hard-court camp and challenged the best in the business ahead of the big tournament. The ATP Finals 2019 will be played at O2 Arena in London, the United Kingdom where the top eight players in the world of tennis will face off against each other.
Thiem, who has lifted his second ATP 500 series title this year, has joined the likes of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Daniil Medvedev, in the ATP Finals 2019, which runs from November 10-17, 2019.
Stefanos Tsitsipas did all he could do to challenge the Austrian tennis maestro. It all started to work well for him at the start as he raced to victory in the first set. However, Thiem recalculated his range and came with a different plan in the second set. His change of plan and mindset changed the complexion of the match. He won the next two sets with authority over the young Greek tennis player.
Thiem, who outlasted Roger Federer for the BNP Paribas Open title in March this year, looked in a different world altogether once he came out of the initial onslaught by Tsitsipas.
The victory allowed Thiem to win four ATP titles for the second time in his ATP career after doing it for the first time in 2016.
Talking to the presenter after his title triumph in Beijing, Thiem said, “Honestly, I think this was one of the best matches I’ve played so far in my whole career. I know it’s tough for you, Stefanos, but you played amazing and I really hope that we have lots of more finals coming in the biggest tournaments around the world. It was our first one, and really, last year we had a great rivalry going on. So I really hope this rivalry continues.”
The two players had played five matches going into the China Open 2019 final with Thiem enjoying a slender 3-2 lead.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has won two titles this year, said, “He doesn’t let people win. He always finds solutions.” He is sixth in the Race to ATP Finals 2019 and is highly likely to get there. The top eight players in the ATP Rankings will get a chance to compete at the year-ending Nitto ATP Finals 2019.
Dominic Thiem received 733,790 US dollars in prize money along with 500 ATP Rankings points whereas runners-up Stefanos Tsitsipas bagged 364,615 US dollars in prize money as well as 300 ATP Rankings points.
