Joe Denly and Ben Stokes led the fight back for visitors against New Zealand as England finished the day one at Bay Oval with 241/4 with Stokes was still at the crease with brilliant 67*.
England skipper Joe Root won the toss on debut test at Bay Oval which is also the 9th test venue of New Zealand and elected to bat first. English openers Joe Burns (52 off 138) and Sibley (22 off 63) added 52 runs for the first wicket.
Colin de Grandhomme (2/28) removed both openers. England skipper Joe Root (2 off 22) failed to impress and lost his wicket to Wagner (1/77) as England were struggling at 120/3. Joe Denly (74 off 181) and Ben Stokes (67* off 114) led the visitor’s fight back as pair added 83 for the fourth wicket. Denly again failed to score his maiden hundred.
Pope added 38 runs for the fifth wicket as England finished the day 1 at 241/4 with Stokes was still at the crease.
