DUBAI, February 29, 2020 (SNN247.com) – Novak Djokovic of Serbia won his 21st straight ATP encounter on Saturday night to clinch his fifth straight title at Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships in the United Arab Emirates.
In the title match, Novak Djokovic outclassed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in straight sets by 6-3 and 6-4.
The Serb won the opening set in just 39 minutes as he gave no window of opportunity to his Greek opponent to stage a comeback after a competitive start to the final.
Novak Djokovic Proved Too Hot to Handle
Tsitsipas tried his best to disrupt Djokovic’s game in the second set and while his score improved, it was Djokovic who celebrated the title triumph in a grand fashion.
Although Tsitsipas shot down eight aces as against Djokovic’s two, it was his unforced errors (17) which brought about his downfall on the big day.
It was the second straight year for Stefanos Tsitsipas to quality for the title match of the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships. He came into this tournament after clinching the Open 13 Provence Trophy in Marseille, France. He had the momentum really to make it big this time. However, he proved to be easy prey for Novak Djokovic who is playing the best tennis of his career.
Before Saturday’s final, the two finalists were tied at 2-2 in their ATP Head2Head series. However, Djokovic has the last laugh as he has lifted the crown in Dubai for the fifth time.
Djokovic is the reigning number one player whereas Tsitsipas is the world number six in the ATP Rankings. The victory will add more value in the stature of the Serb who has been dealing with the younger players in the circuit like a true champion.
All is not lost for Stefanos Tsitsipas though. He can take a number of positives from the tournament as he continued to make his presence felt in Dubai for the second straight year.
