Monterrey Open: Wang, Fernandez shine; Stephens bow out

MONTERREY, March 5, 2020 ( – Wang Yafan of China, Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada, and Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic stormed into the last-eight round of the Monterrey Open, also known as the Abierto GNP Seguros, in Monterrey, Mexico on late Wednesday.

On the other hand, it was the end of the road for Sloane Stephens of the United States who couldn’t prolong her stay in Mexico.

Sloane Stephens has gotten off to the worst possible start to the WTA Seasons 2020. The former US Open champion has lost to a lot younger and inexperienced players in her recent matches. She has only recorded one victory this season as against five defeats.

The worst part is that she has lost to the players who were ranked 129th, 201st, 35th, and 270th on the WTA Rankings.

If that wasn’t enough, she lost to 17-year-old Candian Leyla Annie Fernandez in the second round of the Monterrey Open on Wednesday evening. Interestingly, Leyla Fernandez is ranked 126th in the WTA Rankings.

The 26-year-old American tennis player will have to think hard about her game as he has lost that magical touch which elevated her to the US Open glory a few seasons ago.

Sloane Stephens entered the Abierto GNP Seguros as the fifth-seeded player, but she failed to live up to the expectations again.

Victories for Wang, Bouzkova, Peterson

The world was full of hope for many other players though who cruised into the quarter-final stage of the Monterrey Open 2020. These players included Yafan Wang of China, Rebecca Peterson of Sweden, and Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.

Yafan Wang outclassed Astra Sharma of Australia in a three-set thriller by 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, Rebecca Peterson defeated Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine in straight sets by 7-6, 7-5, Leylah Fernandez thumped Sloane Stephens by 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, whereas Marie Bouzkova downed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia in a one-sided match by 6-4, 6-1 in the last-16 round.

Yafan Wang will take on Marie Bouzkova in the first quarter-final of the Monterrey Open 2020.
