LAHORE, Pakistan, March 8, 2020 (SNN247.com) – Samit Patel inspired Lahore Qalandars to a massive eight-wicket victory over hapless Quetta Gladiators in an important match of the Pakistan Super League 2020 (PSLV) at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday.
This was the fourth straight defeat for the defending champions who are left to fight the struggle for their survival in the fifth edition of the Pakistan Super League. Quetta Gladiators have won only three of their eight matches so far, which means they will have to win their last two league matches to stay in the contention for the top-four finish.
Quetta Gladiators will face off against Multan Sultans, the points table toppers, on March 11 in Lahore before taking on Karachi Kings on March 15 in Karachi.
It was a disastrous yet dubious exhibition of cricket by the defending champions as only three of their batsmen could enter double figures.
Jason Roy (6 off 13), Shane Watson (Gold Duck), Ahmed Shehzad (9 off 8 – 2 fours), skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed (1 off 5), Azam Khan (Duck), Ben Cutting (Golden Duck), and Mohammad Nawaz (10 off 26 – 1 four) all failed to make an impression with the willow.
Sohail Khan (32 off 35 – 2 fours, 2 sixes) and Zahid Mahmood (19* off 19 – 2 fours) gave Quetta Gladiators something to bowl at with some rearguard action. In the end, Quetta Gladiators could only manage 9/98 from their 20 overs.
Samit Patel’s Night
It was Samit Patel’s night with the ball as the left-arm off-spinner captured four wickets for just five runs. He bowled the most economical spell of the Pakistan Super League. It was also the best bowling figures of the PSL 5. Shaheen Shah Afridi (4-0-20-2), Raja Farzan (4-0-24-2), and Salman Arshad (1-0-9-1) were also among the wicket-takers for Lahore Qalandars.
Chasing 99 runs for victory was never going to trouble Lahore Qalandars in front of their home crowd. Fakhar Zaman (20 off 13 – 3 fours, 1 six) and Sohail Akhtar (5 off 5) were the only two wickets to fall as Lahore Qalandars achieved their target in just 11.5 overs. Mohammad Hafeez (39* off 32 – 4 fours, 1 six) and Ben Dunk (30* off 21 – 3 fours, 1 six) safely overhauled the target for the home side which recorded their second victory in the PSLV.
Lahore Qalandars Make it Happen Again
Interestingly, both of Lahore Qalandars’ victories have come against Quetta Gladiators. They still have four matches to play in the ongoing season. They have to face off against Karachi Kings twice before playing Peshawar Zalmi and Multan Sultans in the remaining two matches.
Samit Patel was declared the Player of the Match for producing the most economical bowling spell in this year’s edition of the Pakistan Super League.
In Sunday’s two matches of PSL 5, Islamabad United will be up against Multan Sultans in Rawalpindi at 2:00 p.m. whereas Lahore Qalandars will take on Karachi Kings in one of the highly-anticipated matches in Lahore at 7:00 p.m. local time.
